The Thinking and Experience Behind Magnificent Parent

Magnificent Parent has been shaped by Peter Rowan’s experience as a father, his work in education, his research, his practical life experience, and his deep belief in the magnificence already present in every child.

At its heart is a simple purpose:

To help parents understand what to do, when to do it, and why it matters.

Magnificent Parent did not begin as an abstract theory. It grew from a question that has occupied much of Peter’s life:

What can we, as parents, do to give a child the greatest opportunity for a happy childhood, a rich and developing mind, a loving relationship with life, and the freedom to express and unfold the magnificence they carry from birth into adulthood?

For Peter, that question became intensely practical when he became a father.

He was fortunate to be a full-time parent for much of his daughter Adelaide’s early life. During those years, he focused closely on her development, education, confidence, wellbeing, curiosity, and love of life.

That experience strengthened a conviction that now lies at the heart of Magnificent Parent:

We do not create the magnificent child. The magnificence is already there. Our role is to help create the loving conditions in which it can flourish.

A Life Lived in Practice

Peter’s work is grounded not only in study, but in lived experience.

Together with his wife, he raised and educated their daughter largely outside of the conventional education system during her early years.

Their family life included music, singing, acting, dancing, animals, nature, travel, practical work, conversation, reading, discovery, and daily opportunities for learning through life itself.

From an early age, Adelaide explored widely. She developed interests in music, theater, dance, animals, nature, travel, and practical work.

As she grew older, her interests continued to expand. She modeled professionally, taught adults ballroom dancing together with the director of a dance studio, pursued wide-ranging intellectual and professional interests, and later graduated from university with a double degree in Law and Environmental Science.

Peter does not tell Adelaide’s story because he believes every child should follow her path.

Quite the opposite.

He tells it because every child’s path can be different.

What mattered was not producing a particular collection of achievements. It was preserving and nourishing curiosity, confidence, capability, independence, joy in learning, and the freedom to discover who she was.

The Child’s Own Magnificent Pathway

Peter believes that every child is born good.

Every child is born magnificent.

Every child carries their own unfolding pathway of development and education.

In Magnificent Parent, this is described as the child’s Own Magnificent Self Development and Educational Program, or *OMSDEP*.

This means the child is not an empty vessel waiting to be filled.

The child is already alive with possibility, curiosity, intelligence, movement, feeling, sensation, attention, and the natural desire to grow.

The parent’s role is to become a loving facilitator, guide, guardian, and provider of opportunity — observing carefully, understanding deeply, and offering helpful experiences as the child’s abilities unfold.

This principle runs throughout Peter’s books and the Magnificent Parent Course.

Education Is Bigger Than Schooling

Peter’s life and work have taken him through education, business, building, environmental work, media, and extensive travel.

He has taught in schools and further education, served on the Academic Board of an Australian College of Advanced Education, worked in educational and children’s media, and taken education about the natural world into schools.

Those experiences reinforced something he learned most powerfully as a parent:

Education is much bigger than schooling.

A child is learning from birth. They are learning through what they hear, see, touch, taste, smell, and do.

They are learning through balance, movement, language, music, play, exploration, relationship, and the quality of the loving human environment surrounding them.

They are learning through ordinary family life.

This is why Magnificent Parent is not about pushing children to achieve earlier or turning childhood into school.

It is about helping parents understand what they can do, when they can do it, why it matters, and how much joy parent and child can have doing it together.

The Work That Became Magnificent Parent

Magnificent Parent is the work that grew from Peter’s experience as a father and from a lifetime of learning.

It brings together love, developmental understanding, practical games, joyful parent-child experiences, and a deep respect for the child’s own unfolding life.

The Magnificent Parent Course is built around Seven Developmental Threads and Seven Progressive Levels of Growth.

These Threads include:

Hands
Touch
Balance
Mobility

Together, they help parents see the child’s development as a connected whole. The child does not develop in isolated parts.

Language, movement, perception, social development, touch, balance, manual development, music, emotional security, curiosity, and understanding grow together — each influencing and strengthening the others.

The Course helps parents recognize these connections and bring them into everyday family life through practical games, activities, loving experiences, and clear developmental guidance.

This short archival video was recorded when Adelaide was about fifteen years old.

It belongs to an earlier era of phone recording, so the visual quality is modest by modern standards. Its value is not in cinematic polish, but in what it quietly records: movement, rhythm, confidence, expression, social ease, and joy.

Dance became one part of Adelaide’s wide-ranging pathway of learning and life. It gave her opportunities to experience music through the body, to move with balance and coordination, to develop confidence in expression, and to participate socially with grace and enjoyment.

This video is included as a glimpse, not as a prescription.

Magnificent Parent does not suggest that every child should dance, perform, model, travel widely, or follow Adelaide’s path. Every child’s pathway is their own.

What matters is not a particular activity or achievement.

What matters is the richness of the environment, the freedom to discover, the confidence to participate, and the loving support that allows a child’s own interests and abilities to unfold.

In Adelaide’s life, dance was one expression of that unfolding.

In another child’s life, it may be music, animals, nature, building, reading, drawing, climbing, helping, singing, caring for others, exploring the world, or something entirely their own.

The purpose of Magnificent Parent is to help parents recognize and nourish these opportunities — not through pressure, comparison, or performance, but through love, understanding, practical experience, and joyful participation in life. The recording quality belongs to an earlier era of phone video, but the value of the moment remains — rhythm, movement, confidence, expression, and joy.

A Larger Purpose

For Peter, Magnificent Parent also carries a larger purpose.

He believes the way we love, nurture, and educate our children reaches far beyond our own families.

When we help children grow with love, confidence, curiosity, independent thought, compassion, usefulness, joy, and a deep enjoyment of life, we are also contributing to the kind of adults they may become — and therefore to the society and world they will eventually help create.

Peter has expressed this purpose simply:

The future of humanity will benefit from your parenting.

That is ultimately why he created Magnificent Parent.

He wants to place into the hands of parents the best knowledge and experience he can offer, so they can understand their children more deeply, enjoy them more completely, and provide extraordinary opportunities for development without losing the love, freedom, play, and wonder that should belong to childhood.

If Magnificent Parent helps more children experience happy and loving childhoods, helps more parents experience the extraordinary joy that can come from raising them, and in some meaningful way helps those children grow into adults who make our world happier, wiser, and more humane, then the work will have achieved what it was intended to do.
